We had the pleasure of attending the first-ever Porter Fights Prostate Cancer Bonspiel, a fundraiser supporting local prostate cancer research activities. Curler after curler shared with us that they had a wonderful time and couldn’t imagine a better way to spend a Saturday in Sudbury! Here is a little snapshot of what happened, as told by Alan Arkilander, co-organizer of the event:
On Saturday February 8th, the Idylwylde Golf and Country Club hosted the first Porter Fights Prostate Cancer Bonspiel organized by members, Bob Cecchetto and Alan Arkilander. With the help of the Idylwylde’s Courtney Rivard, event coordinator, 18 teams signed up and enjoyed a full day of curling in an effort to raise funds for the Northern Cancer Foundation (NCF).
Participants were encouraged to ask friends and family to support their efforts by donating pledges. Twenty-four hours before the event was to begin, the event had already raised over $21,000- earmarked for prostate cancer research at Health Sciences North!
Curlers were treated to a hot lunch and exquisite dinner provided by the Idylwylde’s Chef Paolo, earning him a standing ovation from all who attended. Later on, music was provided by Bill McElree of Absolute Weddings. Presenting sponsor, Porter Airlines donated a trip for two anywhere in North America which was won in a reverse draw by curler Greg Rocca!
In total, $25,000 was raised in the Porter Fights Prostate Cancer Bonspiel! It was such a huge success that Bob and Alan are already working on next year’s event! Many thanks to all those who participated, donated and supported the bonspiel- we hope to see you next year!
